Coral Banded Shrimp Not Reef Safe?
I got a few new inhabitants today, a favia brain, and an open brain. As soon as I put the open brain in the bottom of the tank, my coral banded shrimp came treking out. I watched really closely and right in front of me he reached out a claw and picked a piece of the flesh from the open brain and put it in his mouth. Someone please tell me he was just confused. Has anyone else ever had a coral banded shrimp pick at their corals?

I have a coral banded and a open brain, plus other corals and have never seen him take a bite...

I've been having trouble with something eating my zoas lately. I had to relocate all of them to the sump so they can heal and until I can figure out who the culprit is. After seeing the coral banded do what it just did to the open brain, I am wondering if he took out the zoas also.

I would suspect that there was damaged tissue or just some stuff on it. My shrimp come out anytime I put something new in the tank and give it a good once over... Watch him for a couple days, but I suspect that it is no big deal

Okay......well I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he was just picking something totally unrelated to brain coral flesh off of it.

My bicolor blenny would beg to differ! But you're right, in terms of corals, I've never seen a problem.

CBS is a cleaner and may just be exhibiting his natural behaviour, lacking a moray to 'pick on'. (Not my picture)
A few years ago, my daughter's school science project involved a CBS and "Spotty", our Chainlink Moray. The experiment ended abruptly when Spotty made lunch of the shrimp. The experiment did prove that animals in captivity don't always behave the same as in the wild.

Wow I didn't know they were considered cleaners, but after reading that I looked it up online and you are right, although it says that they very rarely exhibit this behavior in aquariums. Maybe mine is going back to his roots.
