Coral Banded Shrimp "had babies" and molted...

Hello,

I have a mated pair of Coral Banded Shrimp and the female came with eggs all over her underside.

Two days ago I noticed that they weren't there any more...I wondered where they went...I haven't seen any little shrimp anywhere...

Yesterday, she molted...is this normal after getting rid of her "kids"?

If you have had experience with these guys, please let me know what the "cycle" is.

Thank you,

Steven

I haven't heard of CBS breeding in captivity...my experience with pregnant shrimp is limited to peppermint shrimp. But I think some of it carries over. She probably gave birth when you weren't around and your corals and fish had a feast... I don't think shrimp always molt after giving birth, it probably just happened to be that way this time. I believe shrimp(peppermint shrimp, anyway) mate when they molt, I'm not sure what it is for the CBS. Hope this helps a little.

My CBS breed constantly. Every fortnight, one of them will carry a new batch of green eggs which then turn white, and then hatch to little shrimp fry that becomes natural food for my corals and other fish.

My cleaner shrimps are constantly pregnant too!

Here's a pix of my pregnant CBS.

If I remember correctly (haha!) shrimp can only actually mate after a molt? but the fertilized eggs or sperm to fertilze the eggs can be stored....hmmmmm. I should look that up I know there's info at the Breeder's Registry website. I know they can't molt while they are carrying babies, though, so yours seem to be on schedule, Pegasis. Good to see you back on the board Hope all is well!

And Humbug's here too; it's like old home week!

Nice pics, Crab
