cooper lighting M-58 lamps

Does that mean anything to any of you? If so Is it a good brand? I was given this MH fixture a few years ago. Came with a 250watt bulb. Any info on this?
And does anyone think that seperating the ballast from the actual socket is okay?

M58 is std MH ballast, isnt it. If so it should be fine with any of the popular 250watt MH bulbs of whatever kelvin rating suits you.
Not sure what you mean by seperating the bulb and ballast

well right now it is all in one fixture/housing. Doesnt the ballast create alot of heat as well? If so I was thinking of placing the ballast on top of my hood and run the wires under the hood to the fixture, creating less heat under the hood. What's the recommended distance/height from top of acrylic to 250 watt bulb? I plan on running two 3" fans for air circulation.
