Converting from a canister filter to a sump
How hard is it to convert from my current mods of using a fluval canister filter (only sure for flow) to add a sump which then i can use and in sump skimmer since my prism is doing much. What all do i need to purchase? etc.

if your tank is not drilled you need an overflow like the CPR overflow. tubing and a rubbermaid bin. you dont need to buy a sump if you dont have the money. A rubbermaid bin will do as good for 1% of the price. The the return pump and tubing back to the tank. i am sure i missed something but that is the main stuff. dont throw the canister away you can use it occasionally for water clarification

you won't flood as long as you don't keep the sump level to high.

ah thats what i left out. YES you will have a flood if you do not get the aqua medic air pump. it connects to the top of the cpr overflow and continuously sucks the air out of the overflow. I had the CPR without then with the aqua medic pump. after i got the pump i never had to mess with the overflow not once. do not use it or any other hang on overfow without it. You will have a flood if you do not us eit. It is a water/sir pump.

Find a used U tube over flow for $40. Lifereef is a good brand. If you have a local club around someone may have one they will give you. They are much more reliable and you won't have to take antianxiety meds while you are away from the tank wondering if it will fail like the CPRs...

I agree with Hop.
A U-tube is more reliable and does not require additional electricity to run.
Depending on how much space (and $$ to spend) that you have there are many options.
Some sumps will come with an overflow and you can buy one for $200-500 dollars depending on single or dual tubes in overflow collection box. You can also convert a wet-dry filter to a sump by removing bio balls.
Check out www.petpromenade.com , www.aquacave.com or one of the sponsor sites for prices.

or spend nothing, no offense guys, by using a large rubbermaid bin. If you ask around its more common then you think

i just built my sump out of a 20 gal long stardard tank from Petsmart... cost me $35 for the tank and another $30 for the acrylic and silicone. $48 for a used Lifereef (thanks for the correction Hop..LOL) overflow and $40 worth of PVC and related cements/parts.. so around $100 i have a sump...best investment i made for my tank besides the skimmer
