Converting FOWLR to Reef Lighting Question

I have a 110 gal FOWLR Tank now and would like to convert this tank to a reef. I've been researching the lighting requirments, and would like to have 2 - MH and VFO lights.

Is it better to buy MH ballst that supports 250, but only run a 175?

The light fixutes that sit on the tank edge seems to already have a glass/ plex plate enclosurer. What do you with the glass cover I alrerady have in place, which has a flip glass to feed fish?

A 110 is a deep tank, I would go with 400's or 250's min. I would also stick with the par bulb necessary for the ballast. You can keep your glass lid to help save on evaporation. Also if you atke it off you will get better light penetration so you kind of need to weigh the options.

i agree, that size tank you will want to use 400's
it can be done, there is another few tanks that are your size , i think RIch's tank is 110g and in the wall too.. being that deep the 400's are going to be the main lighting , the VHO will be a weaker supp. lighting.

I've only seens 175, 250s, is there a site or brand that makes 400?

My electric supplier is going to love me

Plus what about the heat generation of this size bulb? Do you still place the bulb about 7 - 8 inches from the water?

I would say skip the actinics and go with a 400w 20K bulb it will be a nice colour that is what I used to run on my 135gal.
