Connor's 10 gallon build thread pics
See what happens when Whiskey comes to visit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Back story to make it cute...
My 6 yr old son has wanted a saltwater tank in his room since we put ours up in the living room. He has read endless conversations about tank set up with Whiskey & I and when he found out he was coming he told me he was going to ask Whiskey to help him build a tank!
I giggled - I have 3 tanks already a 10 fresh, the 29 almost seahorse tnak, and the 55 mixed reef i need another saltwater tank like a hole in the head!
Well, i was gifted a clown by a neighboor and then desired the nakeds from KIA soooooo the gifted neigboor clown was out! ( the fight was bad!)
so he son says, mom can I keep nemo in my room....
Here is what happened after that....
Cost of project - 0 dollars!
sand
decorations
water
lights
fish
smile on childs face as he watches his fish....
PRICELESS!
He is even doing his own top offs and remembering to feed his "nemo"
nice!

HOW long has that tank been up?..looks like you just put it together and added a clown..you didnt give no info on the cycle,lol..did you use the dead shrimp trick, demsals?..how long did the cycle take?
i also would advise to add at least 10-15 pounds of live rock for natural filterization..but do it slowly so your sons tank dont spike!!..the hob filter should be ok with enough live rock..im doing it to a 10g tank myself now
im sure you already knew this though ,lol

huh? all new tanks need to cycle..live rock isnt the reason for cycling.. it helps it ..live rock, live sand,fish..help a tank cycle from the waste they give off.. it starts the bio. i can go into the whole story with ammonia, nitrates and nitrites,lol..a tank coudnt cycle with nothing live in it with only saltwater

Clown is a damsel which can help the cycle, but it's better to cycle woth other things like the dead shrimp, because the amonia burns the gills and other things.

me too - well rock borrowed from exsisting tanks, just like this one was - there is rock in the back corner as well as under the fake rock.
the filter in the hob has also been in an exsisting sw tank so there is micro organisms living on it as well to help with the detirtification.

Amy and Whisky are pretty smart, I'm sure they set up the tank to allow for minimal stress for Nemo. This couold have been done with live sand from an established tank, water from an established tank, or live rock from an established tank (Amy has got plenty of established tanks to choose from !). You can actually cycle a tank without any rock, the surface of the glass provides plenty of bacteria for a light bioload. If you add sand, there is an incredible amount of surface area available for bacteria.
