Common Sump?

Up until my "Mini Crash", I was in the process of setting up a wet room in the basement. My thoughts were to install a huge acrylic sump to handle my current 90 and the planned 175. Then relocate or repalce my equipment, but have it all down there.

But with talk of softies giving off toxins that affect stonies, and such, is a common sump really such a good idea?

The SPS tank might need to be skimmed heavier than the softie. If you could figure some way to do that in the same sump you might be ok. My$.02

I had a softie and SPS tank "hooked up" to a common sump

I found that it was easier to move a fish that nipped on sps into the softie tank
(or the other way around)

and when the damsels started breeding in the softie tank, the fry would feed the SPS

A common sump with uncommon critters can be more trouble than it is worth. I initially began rebuilding my 450 and was going to place a 210 gallon softie tank on it as well. I then decided not to, right about the same time I had no more money

But after doing a lot of research since then I would not do it anyways

I don't think it should be an issue. Everything in the ocena is in the same aquarium

I think the idea of a common sump can work with some ideas....such as frag tank additions.........but they dont really make sense for a mixed system. sure the ocean shares as Phishy says........but we arent talking about a ocean here. we are talking about a small closed system. Plus..........trust me when I say losing two displays at the same time really sucks. Linking two displays is a bad idea for this reason alone.
