collecting your own critters
does anyone know what the law says about collecting stuff while diving in FL? HUbby and I are going around Dec and I have read a few threads about people collecting there own corals and things... legal or no?
and if leagal good idea or no?

for softies and such u can collect them but u need a fishing license. No hard corals and no live rock is what Ive been informed here.

There's some distance from which you can't remove certain things, corals, live rock. As far as fish and criiters, I'm not sure. There is a place in Tampa (livereefrocks.com) that sells aqua culture live rock. Really pretty stuff. They fly it to you in water.

I think we had a long thread about this a few months ago. From what I understand, it is legal to collect certain corals like softies and mushrooms but not the rock that they are attached to. Armando is correct in that you need a fishing license to do this. Collecting ANYTHING from a protected area is NOT legal. Much of the Keys and lower Florida is included in various marine sanctuaries and you shouldn't collect things from there. Even if you could collect corals, it might be tough getting them back home, especially now that you can't bring any liquids onto the plane in carry on luggage.

JMO- I think these areas should be left for other divers to enjoy! I want my 1 year old to see what we have had the pleasure to see. There are enough people fragging and growing coral in captivity that there is no need to capture these critters in order to save a couple of dollars.
