coating on top of the water.. PLZ help

i have a slight white coating on the top of the water. I have 2 300GPH power heads and I am using a fluval 403 for my filter. I also have a skimmer. what could this coating be? is it harmful? my tank is crystal clear too, its just on the top of the water.

That is proteins floating on the top of the water. most tanks have the filtration skimming off the top of the water so you don't see that. you may want to look into upgrading the filtration on your tank. most canister filters will present problems later on.

heh it is organics that are disolved and floating now,
aim one of the power heads at the surface,
it is not really harmful but can cause some headackes.
is your skimmer producing a lot? if not give it a good cleaning and turn that bad boy up

Something that skimmers water from the surface, what kind of skimmer do you have now?

most reef systems use the sump system. they work the best in most cases.

the trick is to have something pulling that film under the water either through surface skimming or water movement. A PH is a good start but you may want to re-think your filtration.

you might look at a surface skimmer box for the "skimmer" you have, that will help collect the stuff off the surface

there are other ways depending on how your tank is set up. but usually the best way would involve drilling your tank ans setting up an overflow box. I'm sure more suggestions will come out. there are also HOB overflows that don't require drilling but you will need room behind your tank.

!st that isn't a great skimmer, they hardly work.besides getting a better skimmer you canget a aquarium Surface Skimmer that attachs to your return side of your 403.and put that at one end of the tank and the output at the otherside with a spraybar flowing across the top.You can add a sump!

Agreed I used to think that a seaclone was sufficient till I saw a real good skimmer in action.
