CLS on timer ?
does anyone put their closed loop on a timer ?
the reason i'm asking is the two new clowns i put in the tank today look rather restless. it's almost midnight, and they are swimming kinda funky. as if they are trying to find a spot to sleep, but can't find one.
does anyone turn their CLS off at night so the fish can find a spot without being blown away ?
or am i just being the paranoid rookie and i should not worry about it ?
J.

You cant't do that. How will the tank get O2 and have flow? If anything you can adjust the discharge a bit. My Clowns do the same thing, they will be fine.

i do have my CLS's on a timer, but they are still on all night. i just have my eductor CLS's switching back and forth every 6 hours. i do turn off my under LR CLS at night though.
eventually the clowns will find something to host in and will settle down. clowns tend to swim that lazy dance wiggle thing quite often so i would not worry about it.

well, i would still have the sump return and the skimmer going. so there will be water moving.

A true CLS does practically nothing to oxygenate water.

Keep in mind that after a couple hours of stagnant water sitting in the pipes, the bacteria and other life in the water starts to die. After 10 hours or so it starts to smell pretty bad, the ph will be very low and the water will start to be getting toxic.
The amount of water we are talking about n most peoples closed loops is probably a non issue, but with the amount of water capacity in my plumbing, if one of my closed loops needs shut off for more than a few hours, I dump the lines so that water doesnt get put back into the system.
Even if it was just a little bit of water, I still dont think its good to let the live water in your pipes go stagnant.

G,
What pumps do you have driving your eductors?
I've been wanting to do this, but fear the strain the timers might put on various pumps. Trying to find out what pumps are better able to deal with on/offs.
I'd only be doing the same as you...back and forth every 6 hours or so.
But I've heard the PCX's I'm pushing my CLS with wouldn't do to well on timers.
