clownfish
I am trying to make a pair of false percula clownfish. And earlier today i noticed that the bigger clownfish will get verticle to the smaller one and shake really fast. Are they starting to pair or are they fighting?

the larger one (the female) is asserting it's dominance over the male. this is a good thing

It could be a long time it could be short. I have a pair that have been together A LONG time and I have never seen them mate. They are together but just never happens for me.

It's hard to force to mate. That's why they sell them as mated pairs.I shure would hate to be made to mate with someone I don't want too!

It can take years before they start laying eggs, and even then You may never get them to hatch, We have some that have been togather for 4 years and in the last have been laying and taken care or the eggs and then in a few days they gone, And they lay all the time. It looks like they are being good parents trying to take care ofthe eggs, Who Knows? It is cool and good luck with it, You may want to remove anyother fish fromthe tank when they start.
One other thing to try is get about 4 of them at a young age and place in the tank , then over time You can leave the two that mate and remove the other two. That how they got the pair I 'm taking about at work.

I think in a tank You will only get one female and the rest will stay male. I am no expert on it , But I think thats how it may work , Then if something happen to the female the next largest male will change to female.

Yes the two most dominant would be male and female however the rest would remain juvinial (according to multiple sources). I wouln't add a black perc unless the tank was massive, even then it may disturb the pair from mating.

I have a friend with a 180 reef and a pair of breeding maroon clowns. If you want to read his thread just pm me and I'll send you a link, but it's not easy at all to keep the young alive. If you're able to collect the eggs at the right time and get them to hatch that's one thing... but you need rotifers and proper everything to get them to live more than a few days. I've seen his setup and you'd think he'd have a "clownfish for sale" sign outside his door, but he's yet to have any babies last more than a week. Best of luck to anyone who tries tho!!! How rewarding! I know how proud I feel when my kribs breed, and I do nothing but watch.
