Clown Question -

Hi! I'm new and have only had my tank going for 2.5 months. I have a great local store though who has been super helpful.

The problem I'm having though is with one of my clowns. My first two fish in tank were 2 tank raised clowns. An orange one and a black one. They got along great for the first week, but when I got them an anemone the trouble started. The first night, the black clownfish was in the anemone right away and when the orange one would approach it, the anemone would close! Well after 2 days, it seemed evident that the anemone was letting the orange one in, but that the orange one now wouldn't let the black one near! It's been about 2 months now and it seems that the orange clown wants nothing at all do to with the black one and I think he may even be picking on him. The black clown has a velvety appearance now, not a fresh bright black.

I've been talking to my store owner about this problem for a few weeks now and he seems to think that the black one is being picked on. He had me add garlic to the food to help him, but he thinks that since the black clownfish still has a good appetite (he's the first one up to the top to eat and eats very well) that he's going to be fine. Last night when I was in, I was wanting to buy a new fish and he said it might actually help to shake things up in the tank... so I'm going to see how that goes...

What are your thoughts? Does anyone have any ideas?

never have more than one clown in a tank with an anenome unless you have 1 anenome per clown at least. i would get the black one out of there and take it back. what you have is equal to putting 2 guys in a locked room with 1 beer... nothing but trouble.

Thanks! The store owner told me that as long as I bought them together, they would probably pair up (both were tank raised juveniles).

Is it possible to just get another anemone? It's a 29 gallon tank...

welcome to trt!

I wouldn't put another anemome in that tank. I'd actually take one clown out and get another to match the one you leave in. If you do, just make sure to get the smallest one you can find. This will be the male in the pair. They could then live in the same anemone.

Whiskey - I just posted my tank specs on the specs page... The lighting should be good to go - it was $250 and is specifically for reef tanks. The anemone was also tank raised... It seems to be doing good - I just feel bad for the black one - he looks so lonely!

Clown fish are very teritorial and you can't have more than one type in a small tank. Not sure what the LFS was thinking ( oh wait, they weren't ). I'd say take the black one and trade for a mate to the other clown.

btw..where are the PICS?

that should be fine. I suggested taking the black one back since he's homeless and has been picked on...he's apparently the weaker of the two.
