Clown Breeding Season Started

Finally my occelaris pair laid their eggs on a rock which I can take out of the tank. Last night was the 7th night and I could see big eyes of the tiny larvae. I put the rock with 15 gallons of water from the parents tank to a 20g tanks. I havean 8 watt tube on it which I think is not very powerfull, good air supply and a seachem Ammonia sensor. I hope tonight they'll start to hatch.
Right now I only have golden pearls to feed them but if this doesn't work I'll order rotifers and microalg from England for the next spawning.

I'll put some pictures of the larvae attached to the rock (I hope tonight after work).

Just wanted to share

Thanks Rob, I hope I can manage to take good close ups with my digital fuji camera.

When I put the rock in the small tank, I was able to look at them with a magnifier. I couldn't do this in the parents tank because my tank is a WIDE tank. Anyway they are funny, with those big eyes. Its like "hey there are lots of eyes attached to a rock"

Also tonight I'm going to try to count them

Good luck! I hear it takes a lot of work & money to be successful...but totally cool project.

By the way...I've been out of the loop for a while, what's the latest on Gary's brood?

Congratulations. I wonder if they can see as they are hanging there.

Nice brood, how did they react when you removed their "love shack"?

I dont know if they react but parents were very angry and biting my hand while I was trying to detach the rock.

Strange : Last night only two larvae hatched. I know they don't hatch the same night but only two ??

I hope tonight most of them will hatch

Taking the rock out of the parents tank may not have been a great idea.

1) This may discourage them from spawning again.

But more importantly ......

2) One of the things the male does is "fan" the eggs for a couple of seconds every minute. Without this the eggs will very quickly develop bacteria or fungus. One way to get around this is to put an airstone at very very low directly under the rock so that the bubble come up and simulate the fathers fanning.

If you didn't provide a fanning source and they were less than a couple of hours away from hatching they have probably developed a fungus and gone bad.

To answer the question of how mine are doing ..... they are almost three months old. A lot of them are now about 3/4 of an inch long and therefore ready to be sold. I'll probably take 4 or 5 of them to the LFS next week to see what he thinks. When I get them in a separate container for transportation I'll take a picture and post it.

Thanks for the input Gary ;

After I moved the rock to the breding tank I gave some air from the bottom to protect the larvae from bacteria or fungus.

Now 90% hatched and swimming and I hope eating the golden pearls. There is no ammonia in yet but will accumulate soon.

Gary ; how long did you use parent's water for changes. I plan to use for 5 day than I'll switch to new water, is that ok?

I used straight parents water for first 3 or 4 days. Then 1/2 and 1/2 for a few days, and then pure new water after the first week.

Make sure you let the newly mixed water sit for 24 hours, but no more than 48 hours in covered bucket (to keep light out) after 48 hours it can have too much bacteria. I now it's a pain, but for the first couple of weeks you have to constantly make new water. After they "morph" you don't have to be as careful.

Also "drip" the new water is slowly. I can tell you from experience. If you "pour" the water into the tank some of the babies will go into shock and die immediately. I could believe how fast they died. One second swimming happy go lucky, the next second dead as a door nail.

I used an old tap water purifier as a drip machine. I took out all of the filter material, filled the canister with water for the tank, put an air hose with a valve on the bottom of the purifier, put the machine higher than the tank and gravity feed into the tank using the valve to keep the flow at 60 drips per minute.

I just cleaned the bottom of the tank and refill it very slowly. I used a gang valve to drip water (1 drip per second). Also I read in J. Wilkerson's book that S.G. of the larval tank should be decreased to 1.021 which will give the larvae more chance to survive. Did you do this?

Yes I did. I pretty much followed what Joyce said as if it was a cookbook. That batch is now almost three months old and doing great (and a lot of fun to watch).

I have had three more batches and experimented by being a little lax and not following every detail that she said to do. Bad idea. Short cuts don't work. One was a total failure (all died in 24 hours), One all died in a week, and one had a major loss, but I still have a handful of survivors that are now 2 months old.

Bottom line .... do what she says!

Here is what I learned from the experiments.

1) MUST have rotifers. Other food that I purchased that advertised being able to replace rotifers did not work. MUST have micro algae to feed the rotifers. High SG kills the rotifers. Try to keep the rotifer tank at 1.014 (if the babies are at 1.021)

2) A quick change in temperature or SG will kill instantly.

3) Vigerous cleaning or a loud noise (like dropping the lid shut) can kill instantly (shock).

4) Nitrate, Nitrite, and PH are not as important and they can survive suprising off levels. I found that you can skimp on water changes, as long as you vacumn the junk off the bottom.

5) Once they morph and you get the tank cycled (biolgoical filtration with a sponge filter) you can pretty much just let it go. I have killed more youngsters during cleaning and water changes than I would like to admit.
