cloudy water

I have had my tank set up with just salt water, and sand with water circulating through my sump. I now have cloudy water, and have for about three weeks. Do you think I just need a skimmer as I wait for mooney for LR, and then lighting? I have an e-mail out to a fellow reefer for a skimmer how to. If anyone else has an easy idea for me I would appreciate it. My tank measures 6ft.X18 X 28. The room under the tank with my sump leaves me a height of 28-29inches for height of a skimmer if i plumb it in my sump.

Did you thoroughly rinse your sand before adding it to the tank. I rinsed my sand for 2 days, and still got cloudy water for about a week. A skimmer will help. I probably just needs to settle. make sure your water preasure is not kicking up sand storms---this will prolong the process.

I agree with spanky, you may have too much flow directed at the sandbead and with no LR it is prob. all over the place. Try redirecting your flow if you can and it should clear up. any livestock? if not this isn't a problem just doesn't look nice

I rinsed it well and after I first put it in the tank it took awhile to settle and cleared up. Now it is cloudy again. I don't know if it is stuff on the glass or actually the water.

might be stuff growing on your glass, any natural sunlight in the room that it is in? Lighitng during the initial stages of setting up a tank can cause all kinds of stuff to start growing in the tank, even if you don't have anything "alive" in the tank. Are you using RO/DI water?

Yes I do use RO/DI water and there is natural sunlight in the front room where the aquarium is but it is far away from it.

Maybe I just need to clean the glass.

I just cleaned the glass and when I looked through the water back toward the light. I can see all kinds of stuff in the water. I'll have to let it run for awhile to see, but I think that might have been my problem. I'm still waiting to DIY my own skimmer soon though.

Hey Boo

He is selling a used Prizm Skimmer rated for 300 gallons for $50
I am sure you can finagle him a little lower. Its not the greatest but it will get you started and begin to pull some "crap" out of the water.
Just a thought.
