RO is almost a necessity in this hobby IMO...There is just too much "junk" in regular tap water. I actually used NSW straight out of the ocean at one point...Problem is that if you are in a populated area all the runoff into the ocean will probably give you water quality issue on that front too. Best bet is still an RO unit.

Trust us, the RO/DI will not harm your tank! There is something else going on in there.

about to pull my hair out....anybody ever used "clarity" from sea chem ?? i have had a few saltwater tanks over the years even a fowlr it had 2 big puffers in it and it never got cloudy...none of my tanks have ever been this cloudy before except for when you put the sand in but that clears up in like 24 hrs......

Glad to hear the skimmer is working well for you!

Are you running any mechanical filtration? When I upgraded tanks a few weeks ago my water was cloudy...I ran an old HOB filter for a few days with just some filter pads in it to filter out the big stuff...that and some carbon cleared it up pretty quick.

salinity is 1.023....salt is instant ocean...mechanical filtration is 2 hob filters with carbon only....carbon has been in for a couple of days...i guess i will try some pads in the for a day or two

Let's see...
silicates in the new sand?
residue/residuals from equipment?
bad water?
bad tank?
leeching of something?
TDS?

I'm at a loss (assumes fetal position, inserts thumb to mouth and goes to "happy place")

well just got back from the lfs they tested the water too...everything was great and no phosphates they asked me every question they could think of and then they said the only thing they could think of is a possible algae bloom ?? which i do have some brown algae on the sand...the glass is clean thats the first thing i tried and just tried to clean it again but still cloudy.... it was old sand and i rinsed it throughly along with the rock ....all the equipment was scrubbed clean with baking soda and water before i set it up....the tank has been running for close to a month...we have had the tank itself for 3 years never clouded before...what is tds ?? i have fresh carbon in the filters with the filter "cotton" to try to get rid of it....the store said as long as the water was testing ok just do a few more water changes over a few days or just see if it goes away.....i have to admit i am lost
