If it's one-at-a-time clicking, it could be a pistol shrimp. If it's rapid-fire clicking, it's likely a mantis shrimp.
I had a mantis in my seahorse tank for 3 years - never saw it but I heard it every day. Fortunately it never did any harm - I'm sure it found enough leftovers in the pony tank not to need to hunt - however most folks aren't that lucky.
You can fashion a trap by taking a plastic soda bottle, cutting off the funnel end, inverting it, fastening it so the funnel end doesn't come off, and baiting the bottle and put it in the tank at night. IF the shrimp can find the bait in the bottle, chances are he won't be able to get out again - sort of like a lobster trap.
Hope this helps,
Jenn

will a one inch mantis cause much damage to the fingers? Or do they have to be a certain size to cause serious damage?

depends on the type, the spearers will pierce your skin and stab you, that will really hurt, the smashers will try to hit you, which has got to sting like no other.
They can shatter glass, but they can also crack acrylic. Most however, never do that. I know a guy that kept a peacock mantis for years and it was about 8 inches when it finally died. He never had any problems with his but other people lose tanks to them.

mantis damage
Here is an article about mantis damage, and is the tank smashing a bit of a myth?
