Cleaning Live Sand

I got a 5 gallon bucket of live sand from an established reef tank. I used a little of the sand, 2-4 cups spread all around, to seed my sand bed. Now I have a lot of leftover sand that I want to use in the fuge I am starting. I would like to know if anyone has a suggestion how I can clean the sand so that I don't start a new cycle from all the dead waste in the tank.
