Cleaning Little Giant Pumps

Question:

I have a Little Giant 3 and a 4 MDQX-SC pump. To clean these, does anybody take the pump section apart? And, if so, is it sealed with an o-ring?

Thanks,

Bill

Cool

I have cleaned my LG4s only once in 2.5 years. I did take the impeller section apart, very easy to do, and my recollection is that there is a very sturdy o-ring in place. I did this to two pumps at the same time and there was no reason/need to replace this part and I've never had a single drip since performing the cleaning over 18 months ago. If that's your concern, my experience is not to worry about it

Yes, I clean the insides once a year and oil the bearings every 4-5 months. It's best to remove the pump from the system so that it is easy to work on. remove the 4 nuts that hold the pump section together. the pump will then open up and you can remove the impeller. Be carefull not to lose/break the ceramic shaft and washers! I use an old toothbrush to remove all the gunk from the pump housing and impeller. If there is any calcium build-up you can use some white vinegar to soak the parts in. Rinse everything and put it all back together. Should take less then 1/2 hour. While you are at it you can oil the two bearings. Remove the two plastic plugs to oil. I add 2-3 drops of 20 weight non-detergent oil to each bearing. Bob
