Cleaner Wrasse vs Cleaner Shrimp

What's a better addition to help take care of my blue tang? Or, can I have both?

Thanks

Jason

they are both very sufficient. I have had trouble with cleaner wrasses searching out food in the filter after they clean up everyone in the tank. I doubt a shrimp could get up and in there. A hawaiian cleaner wrasse is very beautiful though and would make an excellent addition to any tank. You could also look into getting a juvenile angelfish or a pygmie as they have been known to be cleaners.

I've already got 2 dwarf angels in the tank, a coral beauty and a bi-colour. So there's no problem having both a cleaner shrimp and a cleaner wrasse?

I've seen both in a tank before. I'll tell you what is interesting...is having two cleaner wrasses and watching them setup cleaning stations. Wait...how big is your tank, and how many and what types of fish/corals do you have?

I can't speak to cleaner wrasses, but I think cleaner shrimp are hit or miss, especially if they get some of the food you throw in for the fishies. Keep the water pristine and the stress level at a minimum, Jason!

Never had a cleaner wrasse but have a shrimp and hes great, I hand feed him and he will even clean the dead skin off of my hand. He has his fish wash set up and if someone pulls up hes all over em.

I would go shrimp as they are more forgiving. the cleaner wrasses are very picky and delecate. If you go with shrimp then get 2 or 3 as they will do much better that way.

The shrimp have really cool personalities, they do some cool acrobatics and are a trip to watch scoot around the tank!

ive never owned a cleaner wrasse but ive heard that if they dont have enough food ( parasites , bacteria , dead scales ) they will start to eat the slime coat off other fish and stress them and damage them .

get the shrimp

cleaner wrasses are on the do not buy list
1. you do more harm to the natural reef by removing them from it.
cleaner wrasses perform a much needed job on the reef by keeping bigger fish free of parasites

2. 99% of them only eat parasites and are destined to die of starvation in the home aquarium

I don't like to be preachy about things, but this is one of the few I feel very strong about

do not get a cleaner wrasse!!! they are only recommended for people with very large tanks with huge populations of fish. it will starve to death in your tank when the ick is gone.

a shrimp or a wrasse will not solve an ick problem. ick is caused by stress, you need to figure out what the stress is.

I wouldn't suggest a cleaner wrasse Jason, I know I may sound like a hypocrite since I have one but I watched him eat prepared food at the LFS. I think that the neon goby idea is great or cleaner shrimp being the best choice, again don't go by my tank as I am seeing things even I haven't seen b4 in this setup (my 2 shrimp hide ALL day)
