I've never seen "little purple threads" in Clavularia, so I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about. Can you describe them any further?
In general, Clavularia, according to Borneman's book, prefers moderate to bright light, moderate to strong current and will not feed on typical food items offered. He says most will not sting other corals and are not themselves stung by other corals.
My own experience has been that there is a wide variety of Clavularia with an equally wide range of needs/habits. Naturally, as luck would have it, the least attractive specimen that I've owned has been the hardiest and fastest growing, tolerant of almost any conditions. That particular specimen also inflicts a nasty sting on any neighbors in the course of its aggressive growth. Anybody want some frags? I've got plenty
