Question

Clarki behavior.

I just got 2 new clarki clowns. I fell in love with them went I went to the LFS this past weekend but now they are behaving strangely. Let me tell you what happened.

Day 1: I bought one and took it home. I let it be by itself for 2 days and after looking at the tank for a bit I decided it was pretty lonely and went back to the LFS and bought another one.

The original one I bought was in a tank by itself and would swim up and down against the side of the tank which was located by another tank with another clarki in it. Well I bought the other one too.

I introduced the new one to the tank and it is a tad bit smaller and it was immediately submissive. The bigger one that had been in the tank for the 2 days layed the smackdown on the smaller guy. It never nipped but it will come up to the smaller and flare its gills and open its mouth and push forward. The smaller one will almost turn sideways and flap its fins slowly and start to sink to the bottom of the tank.

The big one will swim off and head back towards the torch. (It preferred the hammer until #2 was introduced) This only happens when I turn off the day time lights. They are fine when the day time lights are on but when you turn them off the larger fish gets more aggresive. Nobody is fighting physically but the behavior is interesting.

Is this normal? I know my false perc's did similar things but not to this degree at all. With my false perc's they were definitely a pair and hung out together but these guys are acting a little strange.

yes, they are establishing territory and who's boss. you need to block the view to the other tank from each other.. it'll help pairing of the two

I post might be a little confusing. I only have 2 fish in 1 tank. The housing situation I mentioned first was at the LFS. Sorry for the confusion. I am glad to hear that they are acting normal then.

Today they are like 2 peas in a pod.
Where one goes the other one is right behind it.
