If you are planning for a clam, I would suggest a MH, not necessarily watt per gallon. What size tank do you have?

yes, MH is the way to go

some have success with them under other lights
but the easiest answer is MH's

I have a 65 gallon, I'm deciding on a system that is 380 and the other 440watts. It's PC and MH. (250w MH) So I don't know if i need the extra wattage, that's why i'm asking really...

both fixtures are 250w MH's?
then you'll be fine with either
even (2) 150's on a 65 would be fine

I have (1) 250 on my 94 corner, and my clam is loving it

Go with the 440. That way if you upgrade the tank, you won't have to get that much more lighting.

Watts per galllon is a bad way of measuring light.
For clams, it is reccommended to have 1 Metal halide bulb per 2 feet of tank and go up in wattage for the deeper the tank.

How deep is the tank??

If it is 22 inches or more i suggest 2-250 watt MH. You will get great coverage and not be limited to anything you want to keep in the future for not spending that much mroe money than the 150's

Sorry to high-jack the thread, but i also want a clam, and was wondering the same thing!! I have a standard 90g, with 2-250w MH over it, so you're saying that I could keep a clam, and some SPS???? Yahoo!! Can't wait to go to our local frag swap at the end of the month!!!

yes your lights should be sufficient
However, dont go on SPS/ clam buying binges until you experiment how those animals will do under your system, but your lights sound fine.
Just make sure you have at least 450 calcium and a high buffering capacity.

Clams and sps do not require high levels of everything.

Just maintained acceptable levels

All having really high calcium does for you is create calcium build up on your pumps faster

yup, constant is more important than high

and a mature tank
I wouldn't think about a clam unless your tank is more than 6 months old
