Chocolate Tang/Acanthurus Pyroferus

Does anyone have a chocolate tang? If so I would love to see pictures. Also would like to know if it can be housed with hippo tang?

Would be fine to house with a hippo if the tank is large enough. I had the two together, but they hippo recently got the boot (he picked on most of the other fish... too aggressive for my taste, but I didnt feed a whole lot). The A. pyroferus has been an awesome fish for me, though. I just snapped a picture last night.

And here are some others throughout the last couple months. I think I've had it for 9-12 months now.

And this is a picture the day I got it.

You can see it's not changed much so far. If I were stupid (and I am), I'd like to try to get one of the other color variants, such as the half-black. We'll see!

Thank you for you photos and advice. I've have had a chocolate for 2 weeks now (still in quarantine) but it's a beautiful fish, eating and looking very healthy. It is still all yellow with blue trim, can't wait to see what it eventually looks like. I would love to get a hippo as well and it is good to know they don't mind each other as tank mates. Thanks again for your help.

My pleasure. A while ago I was researching this fish and trying to figure out what the variant color morphs would look like as adults, but was disappointed with the type of information available. I did get some feedback in this thread.

I have 2 of them in with 11 other tangs . I'd say they are one of the most peaceful tangs you can get . Great fish . Mine were bright yellow 6 months ago and are very dark now .
Back in march.

and October

I like your layout. What type of tank do you have? It looks deep.

DLO, what size tank is that? It looks familiar, and I'm amazed how it dwarfs the tangs, which I can only assume are 4-5" to have changed color already.

There is some info on the tank in the "specs" forum. Yes they are about 5" in the second photo , the foxface is about 8" and the Hippo is about 9" .
