Chiller rec: Just had some losses

Hello all,

Well, I have managed over the past few years here in Massachusetts, but this summer has been horrible and today I cam home to find that my tanks temp is out of control....

I want to buy a chiller for my 75g, but I may be moving to a 120-150g in the next year. Any advice on a good, small, quiet model that can handle the 75-150g range?

Thanks

Pat

I know how you feel. These last few days have been the hottest/muggiest I can remember. Sorry I cant help on the chiller info, I set up the a/c in the fishroom this morning.

Good luck, stay cool!

I got an outrageous deal at Big Als Online for a 1/4 hp CSL. But they since changed the prices--I think someone had the CSL drop-ins mismarked online. Also, they only charged me $11 to ship the 50pd chiller form Niagara Falls to Sacramento, so I saved $50 there, and there was no tax. Check them out.

Auqa Logic Inc

I have been using one of their 1/6 hp since 1998 on my 45 or 60 gal tanks. It is a drop in probe model. I don't know how quiet a chiller can be. This one isn't too bad. I don't hear it from the other room.

My 1/4 hp CSL drop-in just sounds like a fan--it is actually quieter than the 3 fans I have blowing on the sump and through the hood.

I'm really mad, I lost a colt coral, a plate coral and a colony of alveopora, all of which were over 1 year old....

How high did the temp peak? Was it only one spike? I got a chiller exactly for that reason. I reasoned to myself that I had already spent nearly a thousand dollars on livestock and the tank still looked bare, ergo, I knew it would be $1500-$2000 spent before I was done so I broke down and spend $562 w/shipping for a 1/4 hp CSL drop-in (rated at 125-160). Where I live there is no question that I will need it sooner or later, and I did not want to buy one after I lost $1000 in corals and fish and inverts.

I just added an Aqualogics inline 1/3 hp to my 150 gal SPS a few weeks ago. Its very quiet and works very well. I did lots of research on this and found this to be the best bang for your buck. These thing cause lots of heat and if used in the same room as the tank will still cool the tank but make your air conditioning work just that much harder. I put mine outside.

Good luck

Mark

I have heard good things about those Ice probes but they wont do much on a 150 gal tank. Same goes the the mini-fridges, from what I have read they really don't work at all.

What about the teclima chiller.....it is the chiller/heater combo that is supposed to be very quiet and very low draw on electricity

I pruned back my colt coral.....it was gooey/slimey and almost white.......it was about 1 foot tall.....I had fragged it 3 times....god, sounds like a person died.....anyway, I cut it to the base and hoped that there was some nidus still alive, and if not, that small stump that I left shouldn't pollute the tank much..
