Question

chili coral

I just got back from Tropicorium to get a few more hermit's and snails for my sump/refugium. I saw some red coral that they call "chili coral" beautiful color. I understand that it is a non-photosynthetic coral. Do any of you have these coral in your tanks?
Thank's Bob

Hi Bob!

Welcome to The Reef Tank!

I do have a Alcyonium sp. of the red "Chili" variety in my tank. I've had it for about 1 and 1/2 years and it's never seemed to do all that well. Supposedly these need very little light but I've found that mine tends to do better in a more open exposed area with a little more light and flow than was recommended to me. I feed phytoplankton and my tank is unskimmed so it should have plenty of food sources, I've just never seemed to be able to get it to grow much. I've heard similar accounts from others so I don't think it's one of the easiest corals out there.

Anyone else had a more positive experience?

I had one, about the same time Alice got hers. It didn't fare well and I lost it. I'm not sure that it wasn't in trouble when I got it, but I don't think I would get another. The non photo corals seem to take a lot of care and feeding. They would probably benefit from a species tank set up for their particular needs, especially if it was downstream from a really productive refugium
BTW welcome to TRT
