Chevron Tang

Just got this healthy juvenile Hawaiian Bristletooth or Chevron Tang (Ctenochaetus hawaiiensis) and I think he's just beautiful! He lacks much of the color he will develope as an adult, but I'm jazzed about him all the same! =D

And what fun it will be to watch him grow! =)

I Just wanted to share some pics, and ask what are your *favorite* nutritious supplements for your *favorite* grazing fish?

Nice looking fish. We feed our tang some nori a few times a week and a variety of food in our blender mush. HTH

The bristletooth tangs are more scrapers than pickers but additions of Nori fortified with Selcon are always a good bet with tangs

Cool! Thats easy enough! Thanks Doug and Jon. =D

So far he has been a pretty picky eater and only grazed on the bits of algae growing on the return pipes. He wasn't at all interested in the Seaweed Selects stuff that my first tang enjoyed so much. =P

And since there isn't tooo much for him to graze on in my tank I'd like to find something he likes soon.

Lol! This reminds me of my sis trying to feed her toddler. She is always trying to find nutritious things that Hailey will *actually* eat. =D

Thanks again. =)

Wow! He's a BEAUTY... hope you don't mind me asking but how much did he cost? I can't find chevron tangs for less than $100 around here.

Thumbs up

I've had a Kole tang, same family and eating habits, for two years. If you can, leave some of the tank walls unwiped as they really want to "kiss" the glass clean of film algae. The Kole will now take flake, frozen cube, live brine and will definitely pull at the sushi nori I feed the other tangs in the tank. I think your Chevron will come around and eat the same foods but you have to be persistent. Fish new to a tank will most times take a while to check out the menu. JME. HTH.

"He lacks much of the color he will develope as an adult,..."

That's a beauty, Casie!

Not to burst any bubbles, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but your Cheveron is probably as colorful as it will get. Most of the Ctenochaetus family are most colorful as juvies and become duller as they mature, unlike other tang families. Even so, what little color they lose is usually made up for in their more agreeable dispositions and smaller adult sizes!

Agreed - one of my LFS display reefs has about a 4-5 year old chevron and he is not particularly colorful, looks like a dark, slightly dull purple tang, but when you look closely he has beautiful markings. Chevrons are subtle but beautiful.

Howdy dbman =)

I had Aquarium Concepts order him for me. I knew I wanted a tang, but decided on the Chevron after seeing one in a friend's tank, and cheking out his juvenile and adult pics in the Burgess's Atlas (page 589).

It took nearly 3 weeks for him to arrive at the store but they only charged me $79 so I feel like I got a great deal! =D

Thanks for the feeding advice XeniaPhobe! =) Hearing about your Kole encourages me. I'd love to have him accept foods that are easy to feed and* good for him. =D

Unless the pics in the atlas are off (stranger things have happened) I expect him to darken slightly and develop more defined markings. =) Time will tell! And as you say, Oodley, no matter what coloring he becomes... I'll be pleased to have a healthy good natured and happy fishy!
