Chevron Tang

Hey all, I was wondering what everybody's thoughts were about the Chevron Tang (hoping not to get smacked...). I find them to be beautiful, and would love to have one in my 125 (not sure as to how large they get) with some other fish. Any opinions welcome!!

Hey Wagz-

A single chevron would do nicely as the only tang in your tank. Just so you know, they lose their brilliant blue/orange color when they age and turn a darker olive color. Here's a link to a nice pic of a darker one....still a very nice fish. http://reality.sgi.com/tritran/reef/chevron.html
Here's a link on keeping them: http://saltaquarium.about.com/blpick...htm?once=true&
Here's a pic of one completely changed:

I forgot minimum tank size recommended is 100g. They get about 10" long.

GREAT PIC BROOKE!!!! I love how they look as juveniles and adults, and would only want one tang in my tank (125). Am hoping that my Bicolor won't be a problem, but am kinda curious as to whether it would be or not...Thanks for your reply!!!!

I found this little blurb in a great article from aquarium frontiers.
Quote:
Other tangs do not fare as well in captive systems, and a likely explanation is a poor fit between tank conditions and the nutritional needs of the tangs. The chevron tang (Ctenochaetus hawaiiensis) belongs to the “bristletooth” family. Tangs in this family feed on detritus, diatoms and other items found in sediment. Reef tanks tend to have a high proportion of rock and a low proportion of open sand. Furthermore, many hobbyists have a phobia about diatoms, taking steps to eliminate them from the tank. Consequently, the chevron tang finds a limited area in which to forage and a limited supply of food. If a hobbyist wants to keep any of the bristletooth tangs, one key is to create an open reef tank with a great deal of substrate area.
Interesting..
