Question

Changing Filter Media???? Help!

I've noticed in the past few weeks that the filter media in the Tetra filter, which hangs on the back of my nano reef, is for a better word, "Clogging Up!"

My question, since I know there's much needed good bacteria growing in there, can it be removed and washed or replaced? Would it be possible to do it in steps, remove one filter cartridge and then another at a later date?

The tank itself has a lot of beneficial bacteria within it, but I'm not sure what damage I would be doing to the bacteria content within the aquarium. Thanks!

Greg

I don't know much about the tetra filter. How big is it, what size tank is it on?

It's a Tetra Tec PF 300 Power Filter w/ Heater, it's a outside of tank hanging unit with two filter pads inside. There's a third sponge material that the water covers until the water level reaches a certain height then the level falls. This exposes the sponge to the air for a brief period of time.

But it's the two filter pads that should be either replaced or rinsed out. The filter unti itsef holds about a quart of water.

Hope that helps!

Greg

When we used a mechanical filter, we replaced the pads frequently... here's a cheap hint: Go to a craft/fabric store (or Wal-Mart), and pick up a roll of quilt batting. Cut to fit, and VOILA! New filter media, dirt cheap. I wouldn't worry about losing bacteria - it'll grow back, and there should be enough in your LR to get along just fine.

We haven't used a mechanical filter in years, though, so I'm just guessing your Tetra is similar.

The inner filter(1st one water goes thru) is prolly more clogged. I rinse them out as well as I can one at a time in old water from water change , so as not to kill off the bacteria like happens when they are rinsed under the faucet
