Cellulose core PVC - glue rim & OK to use?
Guys,
I picked up some 4" PVC to make a riser for my skimmer. Figured - no problem cut it into the needed length and put it in. Well, this stuff has a cellulose core.
I've run a good amount of PVC glue around the rim on both sides of the cut PVC. Will this make it OK to use in the tank?
I had hoped to put it in tonight, but with the glue, I'll wait until morning. That is, if it's safe to use.
thanks,
Chris

do not know if i have ever seen that kind of PVC. do not know what to tell you. my guess is that it will be fine. if glued correctly the core should never com into contact with the water.

Ditto - I didn't even notice it, my friend who let me use his saw to cut it did. My guess is it's due to it's size, but not sure. It's like for insulation purposes. Odd and makes me a bit nervous. May go and try to find some without this.
thanks,
Chris

Didn't know that they made it up to 4". The biggest I've seen at HD is 2" and then the ABS stuff to 4"
Was it a special order? What's it for, just courious?

Yeah, if you don't look close, you'd think it was just the normal Sch 40 stuff, but if you look at it (or read all the print on it), it has a core to it. It's that core that makes me uncomfortable to use it. It was just there with the rest of the pvc stuff, but it came from Lowes.
What's it for? Trying to make a riser for the skimmer and 2" PVC just keeps falling over, but if I can't find anything larger than 2" without getting this core stuff, I'll just go with 2" and try to glue it to some acrylic for a top and hope that will work.
thanks,
Chris

biggest issue will be its relative bouyancy. It would be better to use 4" sewer drain pvc than to use this stuff. Interesting that they have $" diameter in this, sounds like an ordering error if it came for a Home Improvement center ike Lowe's, etc. I don't know if it would actually float, but you might want to test this before you proceed any farther (put it in a filled bathtub, see if it floats.)

Thanks Tom, as with the cell core, I didn't think about this either. :-( It floats like a boat. I had planned on drilling holes in the sides, but that's not going to work as I'd just have to keep sealing holes and if I miss one, it could be a big issue.
Back to the drawingboard. I've got some other PVC I can try and just see about glueing it to some acrylic. No prob drilling holes in it.
Live and learn, and thanks everyone for the info. :-)

Heh!
don't think of it as a setback, you were just performing a public service to keepi all those other folks from making a mistake!
Home Depot for a 4" pipe, easy to cut and cheap (about $6 for 10 ft length.) Cut about 2" rings (or whatever height needed) and zip-tie them together through some drilled holes. If you want to get REALLY fancy, buy a hole saw and cut holes in the sides for water flow.
