Question

Caulerpa

Hey guys i was at the LFS and was asking how you can reduce nitrate and they said you can use caulerpa and it will break it down some. Have any of you ever use it before would you recomend it. Is there something i should not mix it with in the tank like certain types of fish or coral or inverts????????????

You dont put Caulerpa in your tank it will grow like a weed and take over,if you want to use it to reduce Nitrates add a refuge onto the system and put it in there.

Amen to that!

ESP Razor Caulerpa. I put some in my tank 4 years ago..I can't get it out without destroying everything. It grows everywhere..smothers and covers stuff, and I have to weekly yank out handfulls so my tank doesn't look like a total dump.

Feather Caulerpa is cool, and was super easy to manage..but razor..stay away! heh heh

Now..in a refugium..it would be ok. Did I scare ya now? heh heh

hehe, yeah, um, *cough cough* I have grape caulerpa... does anything eat it? It was well behaved until I switched to PC lighting and that crap decided to have a friggin' party! It's really happy, but I'm not. Ah well, live and learn.

Deb you think PC is bad, metal halide makes it grow even worse. My last LFS couldn't give it away and they pulled out bags full every day. I laughed when my current LFS said that they actually sell it.

Sorry for a slight hi-jack here COMBIE, but what does razor caulerpa look like????

I have this especially cool looking plate of some kind that i recently acquired that has this green crap that looks kind of like Sasquatch armpit hair on it. I dont know how the stuff is even growing at all. The tank its in has no other undesirable algae growing in it but this stuff is growing rther quickly. It IS higher than midway in the tank however.......I try picking the stuff off and its almost like thatching a yard........it then grows FASTER. It is not anywhere else in my tank.......YET.

How do i get rid of it without hurting my coral??? I was thinking a couple drops of carefully placed ROUND-UP!!!

Fly guy... put the cap on the bottom of the tank and let the grazers hit it for a bit. I have a rainford goby that would clean that up if you want to bring it up here . I do not recommend calupera because it can go sexual and then it sprays sperm all through your tank. look for mangroves or manitee grass instead. they are much easier to control. if you do the refugium then get chaeto instead. it is invasive too but it does a better job than calupera.

I agree with the cheto thing, calpura can go sexual and wipe out your tank. Cheto doesn't do that, a refugiam is simply a sump section with a light over it, as the cheto grows it will take up nitrate and phospate, you just have to trim the cheto from time to time.

you can put cheato in the sump or any other macro algae, but youll need a light on it. reverse day cycle to help with a nightime ph drop too.
