Case Of The Moving Mushroom...
So this is strange, I have a mushroom colony of 7 striped shrooms on one rock. The other day I noticed one big one was missing. I thought the work of the little devil rock crab I can't catch. I noticed today the mushroom has somehow moved about 8" from the rock, under a large section of the main rockwork. Can't see real well but it looks anchored to the base and was extended fully. The place it went is completely shaded. I haven't heard of anything like this, nobody told me shrooms had legs. Should I grab the little escape artist and strap him down somewhere? Or could this be the work of the evil crab (boo, hiss). Anyway no big deal, just strange.

Trust me NICKG, it was nothing that you did or didn't do. They have minds of their own. All I have are shrroms in my tank. I have placed two identical groups of shrooms away from any other shrooms. I left them there for two weeks. Both were the same Discosomas, 2 shrooms on rock #1 moved, known on the other. They will move or detached if they are not getting enough light, something is stinging or irritatating them, or if there's to much direct water current on them which they hate. If it landed in a crevase, it's because the current blew it there. They prefer light over shade. If you leave it there, in time you will see it trying to reach up towards the light. If it hasn't reattached already, I would remove it to a place you prefer and place some netting over it until it can anchor itself again. Remember, they love IODINE. I have to add a drop of Lugols every other day. I would not suggest doing this until you can determine the rate of absorbtion with a high quality test kit.
Good luck my fellow Michigander

Kewl, more people from MI. Not much of a winter yet. You learn something new each day. I had no idea shrooms could move around. I got the mushroom rock a long time ago, as sort of a starter coral. It must be the large sacrophyton behind the rock. He's gotten big and is starting to branch out over the shrooms. I drop in 10ml of Kent tech 1 Iodine every Sunday. I may just let the shrooms do what they may rather than mess with the leather, it seems quite happy where it is, and the other side of the tank has a nice acro frag that is growing really well. I want to keep the shrooms as far away from the sps as possible. Take it easy, now I know who to ask about any other mushroom events. GO STATE!
