Carpentry question? (Hinges)

Hey all you carpenters out there. I am redoing my hinges on my stand door. The door is a piece of 3/4" oak plywood with a piece of 3/4" quarter round as trim. I am going to put on the euro style hinges. Can i put the template at the edge of the plywood? Or do I have to put the template at the edge of the trim. I am just concerned if I put it at the plywood edge the door won't open. Or will the hinge clear?

thanks

these are the lift out and turn hinges, right? so you do not see the hinge at all when closed, correct? if i remember right you need to put the template at the furthest point to the inside of the pivot side. if not it will jam on the the stationary support pivot area. you have a little leeway since the it it a rounover trim, but not much at all.

Depends on how the door closes. There's full overlay, 1/2 overlay, inset etc. Generally you have about a quarter inch from the edge.

PS: Buy a good quality heavy duty hinge or you'll forever be adjusting it.

Are there any good web sites that describe and show how to mount different types of hinges?

I'd be interested to see a web site that shows the different hinges. I will be putting a hinge on a DIY canopy this week so that the front of the canopy opens up and hinges off of the top. And I have no idea how I'm going to do this (I was ok with doors, this one gets me because I want to somewhat hide the hinge.

Sylock, try a piano hinge. That's about as simple as it gets but there are different ways to do it. There's a hinge that flips the door up and then has a ball bearing suspension track that allows you to slide the door back up on to the top. Kind of hard to explain but handy.
