What species? They are not all reef safe. Some are easier to acclimate than others. Many will feed themselves, or benefit from a chunk of meaty food placed beneath them occasionally (again, depending on species).
Whether I'd recommend to a beginner depends on the species -- brittle stars (avoid the green ones!) and serpents are pretty easy to keep, Linckias and Fromias are easy IF they acclimate well, and into a stable and mature system.
If your tank is still fairly new, I'd recommend waiting a while for many species.

Yes they are predatory. They will stand up like a tent, body disc elevated, legs apart. Fish swims underneath, unaware that it's a trap, and whoosh! Star drops and hangs on to the fish while it eats it.
Some other stars, like Chocolate Chip stars, eat corals. Find out what species they have before you buy.

I have a green brittle star and I love seeing him in his hunting position at night, it's been over a year and nobody's disspeared(except for the two watchman gobies, but there was a carpet anemone in there then.... ) I target feed him every other night and no problems so far, although he is a small one, but everyone has there own luck. I would definitly look into linkias, and make sure whatever you get you acclimate them really well, if they "freeze" immediatly after you put them in, it's usually just acclimation shock and they'll be fine in 30 minutes! Good luck!
