Use a small sock (2 tblspoons) semi-activly in the sump.

I'm running a large amount of carbon 24/7 until I can afford a bigger skimmer. I use a DIY reactor made from PVC.

I'll keep 1 big bag in the sump. Once activated it only lasts about 30 days, so i'll change it every month. It's not really a big hastle when doing a water change so i'll just replace it.
