Captive raised vs wild caught

Bit of a dilemma here. I will be getting my first fish ( 2 clowns). Now I can purchase them wild caught from a supplier that I have been dealing with for live rock etc., good prices and quality or buy them captive raised from my LFS. I am leaning towards the captive raised, thinking it would put less pressure on the reefs if people did (am I being naive?) Also is there a difference in hardiness?.

captive raised are generally much hardier than the wild caughts. the genetics show that the parents could withstand the poor water of an aquarium and still be able to breed, and it does help out the natural reefs too. its win win, i say by captive bred fish and corals as often as possible.

I agree, don't buy wild caught clowns, they seem to always die in my experience. I've been told by the LFS that they often have ich or brook. I lost two clowns to brook before I could find a captive bred clown - he is alive and healthy.

I always try to buy captive-raised or aquacultured animals/corals whenever I can. I have had a much better record keeping them alive longer than the wild-caught ones and I agree, it helps not to decimate the oceans just a teeny bit.

Re: captive rasied

Hey thanks for all the good info. and I have been told that there is also a difference between captive raised and captive bred. Of course I ment bred and will only consider to buy fish that I know are available that way now. I can see the confusion as some stores will say captive rasied but still they could have been from the reef.
