Can't get Southdown...Now what??!!
Hey folks,
Well seems I can't get SD sand here in WI. Seems if I could get the stuff there would be NO guarantee it would be the non-playsand type sand. Sooooooooooo...
What kind of sand should I go after now?
I plan to "seed" my sand with detrious and critters from my CC. I'll prolly buy a few lbs of LS from a good LFS here in town just to make sure I'm getting the sand off to a good start.
I also got my new lights installed this Saturday. I converted a CSl custom hood to fit in my existing canopy. I just have to drill a couple holes for the fans now. I removed the glass over the tank to prevent that "wonderful" greenhouse effect on my tank. I plan to go to HD to get some plastic eggcrating to cover the tank.

That does have the same consintency as your garden variety sand correct?
Sorry to be a PIA about this but I want to be sure I get the correct substrate.

If you have the money do a search online. There are web-sites that sell it. If not any sugar grained sand will do. Ive seen sand-blasting sand from hardware stores used for years with no problems. Just make sure its clean and rinse it well.

I heard from the Wisconsin Reef Society that you could get SD sand at The Home Depot in Kohler. It is about an hour or so drive from you.

What brand?
i've often been tempted to try Black Beauty coal slag, (i'd LOVE that Hawiian black volcanic beach look) but i'm petrified of it being full of something horrible....
can you give me more info on what you have seen?

Sand blasting sand is high in silicate and could contain metals in it... It's highly advisable to stay away from sand blasting sand....
For the past 6 months or so, all of my tanks have been running on pool filter sand... It's silica, but hasn't seemed to cause any problems... I have it running in all my freshwater tanks, as well as my 30 and 55 gallon FOWLR's...
When I move, I'll be replacing it with SD, but for the time being... It'll be staying in there for another 6-8 months..

what little i know of coal slag is that it somehow doesn't have enough silicates to be able to cause Silicosis if used as sandblasting sand, but i did learn on another BB that it may have other impurities like metals and who knows what.... i guess i was hoping that it wouldn't leach out or something...
i have heard of other reports of people using silica sand in reef tanks...there was some discussion on water pH saying that salt tanks are too basic to errode the sand and release the silica particles or something...i only understood about half of it and only skimmed it through....

your choice. some say rinse. some say dont rinse.
problem with rinsing is that it's so fine, it's hard to rinse. and also most say you need the fine stuff in there. so just pour it in.. and get ready for the milkshake!

Hey buzz with the laws now adays most sandblasting sand isn't actualy sand but is glass beads. Also I learned that the southdown sand is only made 2and a half hours from my house over in easton pa near the jersey border.
