Can't get new sump in stand

I just got a new sump for my 55 gal and I can't figure out how to get it into the stand. It's too long to go through the doors. I thought about removing the center brace but it's in there really good. I don't think I could remove it without damaging it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Will the end panels come off? If you move/remove the tub of bioballs will you have enough room? Maybe drain the water into a trashcans, move the tank/stand and put the sump in from behind.

Well it appears the tank is full....don't remove any braces while ther is a lot of water in it!

Looks like you may be emptying the tank

How long is the sump? How wide is the sump? How tall is the door opening? How wide is the door opening?

Oh yeah mine had to go in from the back...still had to remove a brace....

the braces there are usually a lot easier to remove and put back in.

I used a 10 gal AGA. I had to remove the top & bottom plastic and insert it from the top & it was still a tight fit. Is there a center support on the back of the cabinet?

How is that stand built??? Do you have a picture of the frame of the stand???......Or can you get a pic from the inside???....If its a overbuilt stand you can get away with removing a brace while its full......
You just will need one or two really strong guys with healthy backs to help you get the brace back in...probably need one strong guy to get it out without damaging the skin of the brace......

most of the risk in damaging the brace will come when you try to get it back in......on the way out it will be the back of it that you cant see that will want to chip off on the edges......vice versa on the way back in

With a large headed rubber mallet and 2 big guys it can be done without hurting it.

The sump is replacing the wet/dry that is in there now.
the sump is 24x10x14
the door opening is 16x21
There is a back brace.
I doubt I could remove the side panels without breaking them

I will take pics of the inside. It is the cheap basic pine stand that you can get at any fish store.

The tank is full and I'm trying to avoid draining it. My fish are being treated with ich and I don't want to stress them out more.

Wow Lora thats a bummer, I wish they would include a removable panel on both sides to get sumps and what not in and out, call it reef ready stand. THats how I built the stand for my 75, it had a 15" wide 55g sump so sliding it in from the end was the only option.
Hopefully someone can come up with a better idea to help you out

I have an empty 90 gal that I could empty everything into but with my fish having ich would it stress them too much? I have a yellow tang, coral beauty, and a blue reef chromis. Also would moving everything cause a nitrate spike? I would hate to loose my cleaner shrimp.

empty 1/2 or 3/4, remove the center brace

or

You should be able to get it in from the top

I'm going to have to glue in my baffles with my sump in the stand. O'well.

wait until they're better before you add it.

I agree with Fly Guy. But rather than trying to find some extra hands... I'd cut another temporary brace and put it in off center enough that you can get the new sump in. Once it's in, the temp brace will make it easier to get the original back in. then remove the temp.

Like he said, big rubber mallet is your friend here.

Well, on second thought.. that's the same stand I have under my 120. I just took a look inside.

There is a cross brace that sits on top of that center brace. I had to take that cross brace off my stand to get my 40g Breeder turned sump into my stand, but I didn't have the display tank on yet. And it popped right out with my rubber mallet.

here's what I think I would do.

Start by cutting a new brace (red beam) that will fit between boards A and B. The original center beam (board C) has a rabbet on both ends, and mostly is just supporting board A on board B. So you don't want your temporary brace to be inside the stand, you want it sitting directly on B and directly under A. Make sure it's a good tight fit.

Next you're going to have to figure out how to get board C out. As I said, there is a cross brace between Board C and it's twin on the back of the stand. It it not in contact with the bottom of the tank (not on mine anyway) so you should be able to remove it, but be gentle about it... you're going to have to knock it up towards the bottom of your tank. might be wise to put some towels on it to dampen the blow if it hits your tank. Go slow here. Once it's free, now you can knock out board C. You put your temporary brace in already right?

Insert new sump.

While board C is out, I'd remove any nails sticking out of it, and also take a chisel to any large ridges of glue just to clean it up a little. put some fresh glue on the rabbets and put it back in place. you may need the mallet again for this. And if you have access to one, I'd take a brad nailer to it to secure board C again from the inside.

Getting that top brace back in now may be a bit of a challenge. Since it's not a weight bearing piece though, I don't think it'll pose too much trouble if it's not back in as good. Again, I'd try to clean out any nails sticking out of it and definitely glue it back in place. Better still would probably be to then get a couple small L brackets to screw it back in good and tight. Since we can't get to the top of it to nail it back in like it was originally.

just saw the pictures you posted of the inside of the stand. It's exactly like mine. just not as deep.

Also, if you have a spare 90 that you can drain som of the water into without having to move fish and rocks, it might not be a bad idea. Even half the water out of your tank could mean as much as a couple hundred pounds difference.
