Question

Cant decide where to start

Hello everyone,
Im just begining to start my newest adventure of creating a reef tank but i dont know where to begin... i am currently debating between a brand new 28gal Nano cube HQI or starting with a 50gal + used tank.... i am very handy so i can build alot of the stuff i need but really dont know where to begin.. if any of you can help point me in the direction of a good starting place i would really appreciate it......

I would go with the biggest tank you can afford. That seems to be the general consensus on most sites I've been to. I'm in the process of setting up my 50 gal reef tank and I already have my eyes on much bigger tanks at the fish store!

I believe that people should always start with a tank of 50 gallon or more. The system is more forgiving which helps in the learning curve

I always give a good starting range of 50-90 gallons for stability and ease of use. as well as startup costs.

Welcome aboard!! w0000000000000000000000t!!!

I think bigger is better (and a tad easier) for beginners. Best of luck to you, and fire away with any questions!

Welcome to TRT!!!

what kind of fish/corals do you want to keep. this can determine the size of your tank rather quickly. as in i would not recommend putting any tangs in a tank 48" or less.

I was thinking of making the tank mostly corals with only 3-5 fish... The tank is really for my son (at least thats what ive been telling my wife) so i want to be able to have a few different kinds of coarls and definately a clown fish but im not sure what else i want to put in there.. i was figuring that once i am able to get the tank an all of the equipment up an running with the live rock in i would start the research on the coarals and fish i want while the tank cycles (that way i wont be tempted to start putting in any livestock too early...(i can tend to get impatient so this will be good for me)

Well, the big question is what kind of corals you want to keep, because that will determine the setup you will need. I know it's kind of difficult to know what you want when you don't know yet what you want. Start looking at the corals for sale on the sponsors websites, as well as liveaquaria.com. Get a feel for the kind of corals you want to see in your tank, and then it will be easier to give you suggestions on a setup.

You will definitely need a skimmer, lighting, powerheads, live rock, and a heater. What types/brands and in what sizes/quantities are all relative to what you will fill the tank with.

Don't run out and buy a canister. The live rock in a reef tank does most of the work the canister would be used for. A protein skimmer is far above a canister filter on things to buy.

p.s. I grew up outside the city. I'm headed up tomorrow for the holiday. Can't wait to hike Muir woods this weekend.
