Canopy and lighting
I have a question about MH distance down to the water level. I belive i have been told by others that 9-10" of height to the water surface. The problem i think i will have is that the inside lid of my canopy to the top of the trim on the tank is 13.5" . Will this be to low for a 2x250w mogul retro fit? It would put me at somewhere about 8.5" from the MH bulb to the top trim on the tank. is this too close? I am just guessing the retros will be about 5" in height once screwed to the inside lid of the canopy.
Is this to close to the water?
Or maybe it will work since the water level will be about a 1/2 to 1" below the top of the tank.

Casey,
You run SE bulbs right? no splash guards?
Do you have your reflectors screwed right into the lid?

I hate to be a pain and sound like a noob, but how hot does the top of your canopy get? I am just worried about it catching on fire or something

If i use spacers that is going to cut down my height from the lamps to the water. I am pretty close to being at minimal height as it is.

8" is as low as I would go with Mh bulbs,I clean my tank alot and dont want to splash them so dont go any lower than 8" to be safe.

Casey is right you wont have any heat issues from them I have had 3 400wts. mounted to my canopies for ever with no problems and you dont want to go (like Casey said) any lower than 8in.
