Question

Can I use a cannister filter in the sump?

Since I know I will probably overload my reef with fish in the beginning I was thinking of using a cannister (like an eheim) with some mechanical/biological filter media (chemipure??/bioballs).

Can I plumb this into the sump or does it have to go directly into the display to work effectively. In theory....wouldn't it clean the ammonia/nitrite by using water from the sump just as effectively? Is it a waste? Or is it necessary to use something like this if I plan on fish with the reef since I don't want to use a wet/dry.....?

Advice?

It can be rebuilt.

as with a wet/dry you will run into the same problems with the cannister filter. if not kept maintained then the cannister filter will become a nitrate factory.

So what to use if I need additional filtration to help with fish by-products???

Not sure if you have a skimmer but I would get the biggest you can for the buck. I am trying to do the same thing. I have a 90g that I want to pack full of fish. I have been running for 5 months and have 6 fish at the moment. Nitrates are just under 10ppm. I want more and more and more, oops I am getting out of hand again

i got one against advice for my 46 as long as you regularly clean it should not be a problem. i do not have room for a sump at the moment so i went for a canister my plan is to use it for short durations on my tanks in the future perhaps once a week. if you already have a sump i would suggest doing somethinking like that.
