Can I have a clam?
We have a 45-gallon SSB tank with MH lights. Right now its fish and one anemone, plus crabs, shrimp and snails. We want to start adding coral, and will as soon as we can get to the "good" LFS, but I was also wondering about clams. Are these hard to keep? Could we get one? Love the look.

clams under 3" will need to be fed, anything over 3" will be more photosynthetic and require little or no feeding. your lighting looks like it will be fine for a clam or two, if you want them. it will also depend on what fish you are keeping in the tank. most angels (even the dwarfs) will pick at the clams mantle. do some research on your fish before buying the clam.
alot of people dont realize that the smaller clams will need to be fed, IMO that is why some people think that they are so hard to keep.
HA, I BEAT WHISKEY TO A REPLY !! guess it is a cold day in ....

Did you read the FAQ? It's a sticky in the Clam Fourm,.. good start.
If you get one I suggest starting with a larger Derassa, or Squmosa, there easer and great starter clams,.. plus they grow fast! One thing to think about is CA and Alk supplimentation,. you will definitally need to dose things if you do get a clam.

With the exception of the Hippinos speices clams have been proven to get 100% of their Czarg requirements for health and growth from their zoox. Some years ago some studys were done using caculations that are now widly considered to be wrong, and that's where this thought came from. Now using the new caculations there is new data coming out that shows how much the zoox can do for thier hosts.
The clam FAQ at the bottom of the thread has my source for this data and a better explanation,.. I used to feed my clams too,.. now I don't and my 1" Maxima, has recovered (serious issues from Q under PC) and growen to a 2+" maxima in just 5 months without any feeding.
HTH,
Whiskey

Thanks, I will read the clam FAQ. The only fish I have that may be an issue is the butterfly. The guy at the LFS said it was a saddleback and not as likely to nip at corals, etc. as other butterflys, but that it still could happen. We will have to see. Might have to get rid of her. Shame, I like that fish.

Sorry,.. I know little about fish, if you posted a thread about if it's a risk to a clam I bet somebody would know. I had a YT that's not supposed to eat clams,.. but one day he decided to start So you really do never know.

It's hard to tell with fish. I have a blue velvet damsel that is supposed to be reef safe but loves to nip at my corals.
