Can freshwater test kits be used wth saltwater?

I have a test kit from a friend who kept discus. Now the kit is labeled as freshwater, and tests for ammonia, nitrate and nitrite. I know ammonia test kits are specific to fresh and salt, but is the same true for nitrate/trite tests? What about ph?
Thanks in advance,
Dustin

Some kits for some parameters say they're good for both, never tried any though. What I would worry about more than anything is that the kits are "past the freshness date" and will give you false readings.

Many will work for both. I use Tetra, and it works both ways.
