Can DSB's be TOO deep?

Hi All

I am adding a DSB to the sump/fuge of my new 150G setup and was wondering if iy van be too deep? I am planning on using around 9 - 10" if argonite sugar fine sand and teh fuge will be lit 24x7 using two 24" 15watt NO tubes. The DSB is 24" long, 18" wide and as I said around 9" deep. It will have around 8" of water over it fed by two 1000 l/hr pumps, one of which is the output from the skimmer

Does this sound ok?

Cheers

Weeeeell, people do it, not sure how necessary it is. I'd be a little concerned with the flow you have across it, that seems like a lot. You may have problems with sandstorms. Also, you might not get the desired action out of your refugium with only NO fluorescents. I was surprised when I changed out to PC's how much better the macroalgae growth was.

thanks. Both of the pumps are variable speed and will go down to 200 l/hr if needed. The one for the skimmer needs to stay on full but the other is only really in there for helping with water changes so I can turn it off if need be. Will keep that in mind about the lights. I can always move them to the QT I have setup and replace them with PC lights. What sort of wattage would you suggest?

Cheers

Edited to say, Note the flow rate was l/hr not GPH -do you still think it is too high? The pumps in the main tank are 1 x 3500 l/hr sump return and 2 x 6500 l/hr CL's

the conversion from us over here is L X .26 = gallons

your 1000L pump is doing 260 gph. not too bad i think for the sand bed, but you said uyou could adjust it when needed to.

This can work, but I am just curious, why do you want such a deep sand bed?

No technical reason - just working on the basis that more is better

If it makes no difference then I can leave it at say 6 - 7" and save some sand....

I don't think it will be better, I don't think it will help and I don't know if it can be a problem that deep.

Only the first 2" of a DSB are where microfauna live, the rest is a depository for detritus. The deeper the DSB the longer before it needs to be replaced.
