Can an external pump heat water more that internal?

I came across an external pump that's supposedly really quiet and reliable.

http://www.bluelineaquatics.com/prod.../velocity.html

but have been told my someone that he found it heated is tank up too much.

Does that make sense...can an external pump make that big of a differnce on water temps?

You'd think it wouldn't heat it up as much wouldn't you?!

Unfortunately, I have a Velocity T-3 and it does get hot, and probably does impart quite a bit of heat to my 150, but it's so quiet that I put up with it. Not sure why it runs so hot. As for whether it imparts more heat than a submersible pump? All the heat from a submersible goes to the water, only some from an external.

I believe the velocity pumps are "water cooled" so it may heat up the water.

aaaagh! Just when I think I've found the perfect pump.

Yardboy, What temp is your tank? Are you having to run a chiller? I don't mind a little heat...would just save me from having to buy a heater , but kind of concerned as it gets pretty hot in Houston from June - September.

In some ways, where you live does not matter as much as how warm or cold you keep the room where the tank is going to be. I am a wimp, I hate hot weather and I like air, also our tank is in our basement so I don't have to worry about heat that much. The pump could add as much as 1 or 2 degrees to your tank.

You could always blow a fan across the pump to cool it.

I tried this with mine but it didn't help.

I just started running a Panworld (like the Iwaki 100) on my new skimmer about a month ago. The temperature in my 180 gallon main tank/75 gallon sump went up about 2.5 degrees , however, I was able to run a big fan across my sump and bring the temperature back down.

Allyson, my tank (a 150) runs right at 80 degrees, without a chiller, but with a fan on the sump. This with a Velocity T-3, Iwaki 55(skimmer) 2-Mag 18's, a Gen-X something or other for my calcium reactor, a Maxijet 1200 as return for the refugium, 3-250 DE MH, 2-140 VHO, 1-250 mogul MH on the refugium. Air con in the house set at 75. Can't get much hotter in Houston than Panama City Beach.

Allyson, my only reservation to recommending Velocity pumps has been that they've been discontinued and so I assumed something was wrong with them. Now I see that Marine Depot has reintroduced them as Poseidon pumps. If noise is an issue for you, check out these pumps. The heat can be dealt with, but noise is very difficult to deal with. My Iwaki, not real quiet anyway, has started to resonate on plywood bottom of my stand, really making a loud HUMMMMM. I've calmed it down twice with padding, but it keeps starting up again. Think I'll try suspending it from a wire!

Yardboy...where were you Thursday? I ordered the BlueLine HD40.

I really got nervous about the heat reportedly generated. Like Jon said....it's dependant upon your room temps, but those of us down South know that when it's 100 deg outside you can't get your room temps down to more than 80 deg..unless of course you have 2 a/c systems and a $400 per month electric bill.

I'm also wondering now if it's the same pumps. I've had others refer to them as being made by CSL, now you say Poseidon and the ones I saw were by BlueLine. I may return the HD40 and give the BlueLine Velocity a try. I'm leaving a 1 ft. space between the tank for air and the wall for extra air flow and have cut hatches in the back my canopy and installed 2 x 5" pc fans. And we always have an adequate supply of "cold pops" in the freezer.

Sorry Allyson. I had to go to Macon on Thursday and when I got back my router and modem had been fried by lightning. Just getting back now.

Good luck with the pump. I hate to say it but you may as well keep it anyway. Eventually one of your pumps will fritz and you'll be glad for a spare. This morning I got up and filled my topoff reservoir, and left the pump running, (a Mag 7 I've had for two years) with suction and discharge valved out. When I noticed it this evening, the clear vinyl tubing was full of black material around the discharge. Looks like the Mag isn't long for this world now.
