Calcium Reactor Media - What's best?
What are the options for calcium reactor media? I've read in other posts that CaribSea ARM is good. What's recommended?

sorry about that
I'm interested in finding this out my self. I've never used a reactor and I would like to know more about them which ones are good and which ones suck on top of that. I didn't even know there was a differance in media I just thought it was all crushed coral. This guy is trying to sell one complete with everything I need (not sure about the controller) for $650. Its brand new is it worth it? Its a Knop C.
Sorry, I got off the subject like that.

Mine's a Precision Marine and I also have the AquaDyne Octopus 3000 controller. My experience with the calcium reactor since I plugged it in this August is that it has relieved me of the ongoing battle of testing and adding lots of CA and ALK supplements. Months go by now and I don't have to do anything. My CA stays steady at 420-450 and ALK at 3.5. Corals are really growing.

Tank is 200 gallon running for almost 7 years. Since the calcium reactor was filled when I hooked it up in August, I don't know what kind of media is in it now, but it is getting low and I need to refill. I have a 6" DSB. Inhabitants include live rock, about 30 hard and soft corals, 7 fish, and 150+ assorted crabs, snails, starfish, cucumbers, etc. Most of the population is original to the set-up of the tank.

You have had this sytem set up and running with the DSB for over 7 years? Have you had any problem with the longevity of the DSB. Please put you input in my other posts if possible I have a couple out there focusing on DSB and new system set up. Please, send me some feed back on your system in relation to my proposed system.

Has anyone used regular crushed coral instead of a specific media? I hear it works too.

so long as you can MAKE SURE that there are no SNAIL OR CLAM SHELLS in it, as the acidified solution will dissolve out the silicates in the shells.

Also remember that if it came from your tank, it is prolly loaded with a phosphate coating... You might want to run the effluent for about 3 or 4 days into a waste collector to remove the surface coating of phosphates from such media and replace your lost ASW system water on a ml per ml basis.
