burried but not dead!

Well I noticed about a month ago my fighting conch was mia and assumed dead. Tonight I saw and eye and snout poking out of the sand. Dug it out and sure enough it was the missing conch. Well he is in the process of burrying himself again. Why is he doing this and how can he survive under the dsb for so long? He used to go back and forth all day long sifting away.

Jena,

What sort of additional food do you target your conch with. I have a pair and have relied on them scavenging, but wouldn't mind assisting their diet with a piece of food here and there.

I don't target feed the conch. He is in the predator tank so there is plenty for him to eat. He is to big to get eaten and the lions don't bother any of my snails(all mexican turbos plus this guy). I just checked and he is in the same spot as he burried in last night. He sticks one eye out of the sand and from time to time I see the snout come out and sweep about. I have had this conch about a year and just seems strange that he used to be all over the tank but suddenly prefers living under the dsb. Tried to get a shot with the camera but all you can see is a white blur. Kinda funny seeing this eye sticking out of the sand and then a snout pop out.
