Bulkhead fitting gaskets

Hi all,
I have Schedule 80 bulkead fittings (1" and 1 1/2").
Each gasket has on one side slight ridges the entire circumference and flat on opposite side.
Since this is my first drilled tank, what side contacts the glass?
