Bryopsis

My nano tank is just starting its algae cycle and I have bryopsis growing on the sand and glass. What could have caused that and do I need to do something at this point?

I will never be able to get a pic

It looks like a feathery single stalk of a fern but really teeny tiny

I think it is easy to get rid of it now... it is just light right?.... use your algae mag on the acrylic and turkey baste the sand... you have a skimmer, right? it can skim it out as you do these things...

Well that is definately what I have, but it is single tiny stalks. I am hoping I don't have to mess with the magnesium but I will if I have to!

bryopsis many times isnt quite so simple.

It spreads by fragmentation, so i fyou start pul;ling the stuff out and dont have perfect flow and husbandry that wont allow these super tiny fragments you create by pulling to settle anywhere, it can easily take foot throughout the tank and then it be a real issue.

again......I say get it while the getting is good. continue to do all of those husbandry things you do for regular algae and treat bryposis differently. DO NOT pluck that stuff off of rocks in your tank......If you can pull them out to do it and rinse before returning then fine. the difference between your regular hair algae and bryopsis is that once your tank goes through this cycle and your nutrient levels are in check the bryopsis will still will/can remain.

I didnt read that close......ive never seen bryopsis grow on glass either with the exception of some really thick coralline with some dying parts it could take hold in.............

Got a good pic of this stuff Joanne??

If it isnt in your rocks anywhere then it shouldnt be that hard to get out of there as you can pull

No because my camera can't zoom that close

It is really tiny, and mostly on the sand. But it looks exactly like the pics you referred me to

Joanne, I had this algae when I first upgraded from my 29 to my 180... it was like little fernlike plants... I just did what I said above and skimmed heavy and with my water changes it went away. I am not sure it is Bryopsis.
