It's brillo pad algae...I bought a few clumps of it...just wondering if any1 else had any. LFS said that small crustaceons etc may feed on it. Basically I wanted to make sure there weren't any neg. issues with it.

It grows really fast, it is a great nutrient exporter.

Do you have any pics? Brillo pad algae is a meaningless name. This name has been used to describe chaetomorpha, bryopsis and a few other macros.

Can take some closer pics tomorrow, but you can see the several clumps of green. They feel exactly like a brillo pad so the name seems to fit this type in particular anyways.

A closer pic will help but first guess would be chaetomorpha or chaeto as Reeftanker 3295 said. It's not harmful but doesn't make a great display tank algae either. It won't attach to anything but will grow out of hand quickly.

Well wife wanted a touch of green color...the kids had put a cpl pcs of fake aq. plant in the tank and I grew tired of those in a hurry and saw these at the LFS so in they went. I will remove if they grow too quickly but as far as "not a good display tank algae" that's definitely a matter of opinion eh? I mean if we're just tlakin' aesthetics.

It's not a good display tank algae for a few reasons, none of them based on it's appearance. It won't attach to any surface and will blow around the tank if you have the right amount of flow. The individual pieces that it's made of will separate from the bundle and get wrapped around everything. It will get sucked into overflows, pumps and wavemakers. If enough pieces get into the pumps, it will jam them up. Chaeto grows in very thick bunches and develops dead areas inside of the dense growth if not routinely pulled apart and pruned. Looks have little to do with the fact that this algae is normally confined to refugiums with screens or socks to prevent it from getting into the tank.
