Brand new fish died after one day home

Hi,

Just wanted to ask a question about my fish. We brought home two green chromis on Saturday afternoon. Sunday afternoon, one of them looked pretty ragged, like it'd been in a fight. Parts of it's dorsal fin were missing and his mouth looked a bit ragged. He hunkered down at the bottom of the tank and about an hour later was belly up. Now, I thought the chromis were pretty hardy. Would a fight have killed him? Other than what I mentioned above, there were no other visible signs of trauma. And, what/who would he have fought with? Other tank mates are two clowns (false percs) the other chromis he came with plus one we already had, 2 skunk cleaner shrimp, 2 mithrax/emerald crabs, 2 brittle/serpent stars and various snails and hermit crabs.

Clowns. I have four in my tank. Wish I would have gotten Fire Gobies. Are the clowns a pair?

also, chromis will beat the crap out of each other if proper schooling isnt worked out. (thats what ive read anyway) some say otherwise.

hmm, good thoughts. The clowns may be becoming a pair..there's a definite size difference and the larger one is getting bigger..As for the schooling, we had just the one chromis, then got two more so there would be three. When the guy was ill, the other two seemed to be hanging out with him, but not in an aggressive way..

the thing with buying fish is you have no idea what happens to them before you buy them.

yes, i agree, i have had that happen to me quite a few times, but i never lose a fish once it has settled in. did you qt it? i always qt fish so i can know why they would die and to watch them carefully for disease.

We didn't QT, but it looked as if he'd been in a fight. I'm sure we acclimated him properly (everything else we put in that day is doing great). Was just wondering about fish fights...I think I need to put a video camera on the tank just to see what goes on when I'm not looking!
